3 Communication Techniques to Build a Strong Company Culture and Retain Top Values-Driven Talent

Every weak business has one thing in common; ineffective communication.

As children, we learned the game of telephone. This is where the teacher would give the first student a phrase, and they'd try to repeat the sentence to the person next to them. When it reached the last person, what started as "I love lily pads on a luscious lake" turned into "I learned farts come from space."

The funny thing is:

It doesn't get better as adults. I see it daily with my teams, clients, vendors, and across all sizes.

By implementing these three techniques, you'll support a good company culture guaranteed.

1. Foster open and transparent communication.

Great companies have dedicated channels to encourage employees to share their ideas and concerns. The reasons this is so critical are:

  • Improves innovation

  • Strengthens problem-solving

  • Build trust and rapport

2. Implement regular team meetings and check-ins.

Whether you like them or not, meetings ensure everyone is on the same page and can collaborate effectively. The four mandatory meetings are:

  • Weekly 1:1s

  • Weekly staff meetings

  • Monthly all-hands meetings

  • Quarterly performance reviews

Just remember: Feedback and criticism happen immediately.

3. The use of effective listening skills to foster good company culture.

Active listening and empathy create a culture of respect, understanding, and accountability.

Practice reflexive listening. Take what the other person said and repeat it to them in your own language, cleaning it up as you rephrase it. Another way to confirm you're listening is to ask questions and repeat what you heard.

Improving your communication skills as a team will enhance your culture and performance — invest energy into upgrading how your team communicates.
