Are you Valuable?
Think long and hard. Are you valuable? This is a cold hard question and you may answer “no.”
As gut wrenching as this is, you’re not alone. I estimate 95% of the worlds population answers with a profound no. I could sit here and riddle through why that’s bad and why you should change but why?
You’ll change when you’re ready.
But, ready or not, let me serve some cold, hard truth to you. A life lesson if you will.
Life owes you nothing
When we’re hiring for new family members at Skylink, we look for people who mesh with our culture. It’s taken a lot of blood and sweat to really hone in on our values.
Yet, most of the resumes and interviews we get are about the persons experience. Despite my greatest effort to pull more out of them. Most interviewees tout their experience and what school they went too. Some even tell me the classes they took. What?
Really, I don’t care.
I want to get to the substance. How they’ll be of value to the entire Skylink family. I want to know what value they’ve created, what pains they’ve solved. Yet, I’m still riddled with nonsense.
We’ve hired VPs from large chains, OEM purchasing experts, and even an ex airline President. None of them worked out. They believed they were owed something based on their experience.
They created no value.
Right now we have awesome people in the Skylink family. People who resolve customers pains, who chip in to help a teammate in need, and who drive forward to achieve our goals. They come up with ideas, refine processes and make the Skylink life better for everybody.
The fact is, life owes you nothing. Just because you’ve been somewhere and did something does not mean you’re owed a job or some perk.
That’s not how life works. Some hide behind the corporate red curtain but most cannot and neither should you.

Getting value is by creating it
In order for you to get value you must create it.
What does value mean? Value means going beyond yourself to help someone else or to help achieve a greater mission.
Here’s two good examples:
- She beat her gross profit goal by 67% and on-boarded 15 new customers in quarter 4.
- He increased our on time delivery from 85% to 99% and achieved surpassed our gross margin target by 3% in Q4.
These are tangible value creators. In business, the value you create is the value you get in return.
Don’t believe for one minute it’s all about your experience.
